Alberta to break ground on $79M phase of Hwy. 19 twinning work south of Edmonton

RoadsAlberta is set to break ground on Phase 2 of its Highway 19 twinning project, not far from Edmonton International Airport.
Work on the ground is expected to start in the next few weeks, Ric McIver, the province’s Minister of Transportation and Municipal Affairs, said during a March 29 press conference.
“Twinning Highway 19 improves safety for both commercial and commuter travellers and makes it more efficient to get Alberta’s goods to market,” he said. “By breaking ground on the western phase, we’re one step closer to a fully twinned Highway 19.”
The western segment covers the 3.5 kilometres of road between Highway 60 and Range Road 261, and is the second of three phases of work. Construction on Phase 1, just west of the QEII, was completed in 2019. The final phase that will twin the midsection of the highway is currently in design. Around 10,000 vehicles use the route, which connects Hwy. 60 to the QEII, each day.
Alberta has committed $48.9 million to Phase 2 of the project, while Ottawa has set aside $27.7 million and the Town of Devon will invest $2.2 million.
Running approximately 18 months, the roadwork is expected to create 400 jobs.
